Therapy approaches offered by Dr. Valdés
Good therapy begins with a genuine connection. When you feel truly heard and supported, that’s when real change becomes possible. Below is an overview of the approaches I offer — each grounded in evidence, and tailored to what you actually need.
Individual Psychotherapy
In individual therapy, we meet one-on-one in a confidential, supportive setting to work through the thoughts, feelings, and behaviors that are getting in the way. My approach is active and collaborative — we’ll identify clear goals together and work toward them in a structured, purposeful way. The quality of the relationship between therapist and client is one of the strongest predictors of a good outcome, and building that trust is something I take seriously from the very first session.
Outdoor-Based Therapy / Walk and Talk Therapy
For some people, stepping outside makes it easier to open up. Outdoor-based therapy — sometimes called Walk and Talk therapy or ecotherapy — offers all the benefits of traditional counseling in a natural setting. Moving through fresh air and green space can ease tension, spark reflection, and shift perspective in ways that sitting across a desk sometimes can’t. It has meaningful research support, and I offer outdoor sessions on Fridays.
Family Therapy
Family therapy works from the understanding that families have real strengths — and that those strengths can be the foundation for lasting change. Sessions involve the whole family working together to improve communication, share responsibility, and navigate challenges more effectively. The goal isn’t to assign blame but to help each person feel heard and to build a dynamic that works better for everyone.
Group Therapy
Much of life happens in groups — at home, at school, at work. Group therapy offers a supported environment to practice new ways of relating, gain perspective from others with shared experiences, and build the kind of self-awareness that carries over into everyday life. Current group offerings are listed on the Current Groups page.
Telehealth
Telehealth delivers therapy through a secure video platform — private, convenient, and just as effective as in-person care for most concerns. It’s a good option for those with busy schedules, transportation limitations, or a preference for meeting from home. I offer telehealth Tuesday through Friday. If you’d like to know what to expect, the Telehealth Preparation Guide walks you through everything.
