Dr. Valdés is a trained provider of SPACE treatment for anxiety and offers SPACE treatment in Katy, TX, and beyond. SPACE is a new, evidence-based treatment specifically designed to help children and adolescents with anxiety disorders and OCD. It was developed by Dr. Eli Lebowitz at the Yale Child Study Center. SPACE stands for Supportive Parenting for Anxious Childhood Emotions. One of the things that makes this treatment so unique, is that, unlike most other treatments for childhood anxiety, SPACE is parent-based. Although children do not have to attend SPACE sessions, they are the patients!
SPACE treatment focuses on changes that parents can make to their own behavior. Parents who participate in SPACE learn to respond more supportively to their anxious child and reduce the accommodations they have been making to the child’s symptoms. Treatment typically takes about 12 sessions, but can be tailored to fit the family’s exact needs and circumstances. Research shows that SPACE treatment can help with many childhood anxiety struggles, including:
-
Separation anxiety
-
Social anxiety
-
Generalized anxiety
-
Fears and phobias
-
Panic disorder and Agoraphobia
-
Selective mutism
-
Obsessive-compulsive disorder
